Case Study: Transitioning from HubSpot to Klaviyo for a Pet Industry Client

We had the opportunity to work on a project for a client in the pet industry. To be honest, it wasn’t an easy task, but we successfully managed to address the challenges they were facing. The client was using HubSpot as both their email service provider (ESP) and internal CRM, where they gathered and processed information about their retailers and customers. However, over time, it became economically unfeasible for them to store data about customers on HubSpot, and they were faced with the question of how to transfer this data while maintaining the personalized information associated with each contact.

In short, the task was clear: move all customers from HubSpot to Klaviyo, and leave retailers in HubSpot along with their personalized data (each contact had up to 6 pets with detailed information, including up to 8 fields collected from surveys). Additionally, we needed to integrate HubSpot surveys to ensure the accurate data transfer into Klaviyo following the same structure.

Our team successfully handled the data migration, configured additional properties in Klaviyo, and set up the integration between HubSpot surveys and Klaviyo using Make.

The client was happy with the results, but in my opinion, choosing an ESP that better suited their needs from the beginning could have avoided some of the complexities we faced.

What to Consider When Choosing the Best Email Marketing ESP for Your eCommerce Business

When selecting the best email marketing service provider (ESP) for your eCommerce business, several factors must be considered to ensure you make the most informed decision. Your email marketing platform should not only meet your current needs but also scale as your business grows. Here’s a breakdown of key factors to think about when choosing your email service provider:

  1. Ease of Use & Interface
You want an email marketing platform that is intuitive and easy to navigate. Whether you’re an experienced marketer or new to email marketing, a user-friendly interface is key. Look for a platform that offers drag-and-drop functionality, simple workflows, and easy email template customization. From my perspective, the more you can do with the design, the better it is in competitive terms.
  2. Deliverability Rates
High email deliverability is essential for ensuring your emails land in the inbox and not the spam folder. Some email marketing tools for eCommerce have better reputations for high deliverability rates than others. Look for platforms with strong email deliverability optimization features to ensure your emails are getting through.Looking for more details on optimizing your deliverability rate? Choose a platform that allows you to segment your audience based on behavior, preferences, and previous interactions with your brand. This ensures high-quality subscribers and helps improve engagement and conversions.
  4. Automation Features
Automation is vital for eCommerce email marketing. Choose an ESP for eCommerce that offers robust email automation features, such as triggered emails based on customer actions (e.g., abandoned carts, purchase confirmations, and welcome emails). These features save time and help maintain engagement automatically.
  5. Integration with eCommerce Platforms
For eCommerce businesses, it’s essential that your email marketing platform integrates seamlessly with your eCommerce platform (e.g., Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento). This ensures smooth data flow, accurate customer tracking, and automated marketing campaigns based on customer behavior. Moreover, that will be important for your brand in long-term perspective, when developing an eCosystem. Wonder what is that? Then I absolutely recommend you to read a related article.
  6. Pricing Structure
Pricing can vary significantly between email marketing platforms. While some platforms offer free plans, others have tiered pricing models based on the number of subscribers or emails sent. It’s important to choose an email service provider that fits your budget and offers the necessary features to run your email marketing campaigns effectively.
  7. Customer Support & Resources
Access to excellent customer support and a variety of educational resources can make all the difference. Look for an ESP that offers support via chat, email, or phone and provides educational materials like guides, tutorials, and webinars.

Emerging Trends in ESPs for 2025: What to Expect

In 2025, Email Service Providers (ESPs) continue to evolve to meet the changing demands of businesses, especially in the ever-growing world of eCommerce. We can expect to see significant advancements in automation, personalization, and AI-driven features. Below are some of the top emerging trends in ESPs that are likely to shape the future of email marketing:

    1. Increased AI Integration
AI-powered features will become even more prominent in ESPs, enabling more sophisticated email personalization and automation. AI will allow businesses to send hyper-targeted emails based on real-time data and behavioral triggers. Expect features such as predictive analytics, automated content generation, and AI-driven email subject lines, which will significantly improve open rates and engagement.
    2. Omnichannel Marketing
The future of ESPs will focus on creating integrated omnichannel marketing experiences. As customers interact with brands across multiple platforms (email, SMS, web, social media), ESPs will facilitate seamless cross-channel campaigns. Expect more platforms to allow for SMS marketing integration and push notifications, offering brands the opportunity to reach their customers at the most opportune times.
    3. Improved Customer Data Platforms (CDPs)
ESPs are likely to integrate even more advanced Customer Data Platforms (CDPs). These platforms will enable businesses to collect, store, and analyze data from various touchpoints to create detailed customer profiles. By combining this data with advanced segmentation, ESPs will offer more precise targeting, allowing businesses to create personalized campaigns that resonate with individual preferences and behaviors.
    4. Greater Focus on Deliverability and Spam Prevention
As email marketing regulations become more stringent globally, email deliverability will be a central focus. Expect ESPs to introduce advanced spam filtering techniques and real-time deliverability monitoring. ESPs will also offer tools that help businesses navigate the complex compliance landscape, such as tools for GDPR compliance and more transparent consent management.
    5. No-Code Email Marketing Solutions
For businesses that want to scale quickly without relying on an extensive tech team, no-code ESP platforms will rise in popularity. These tools will allow marketers to build highly customized automated workflows and email templates without any coding knowledge. This will democratize the ability to create advanced campaigns and improve efficiency for small to medium-sized businesses.
    6. Interactive and Dynamic Content
Expect ESPs to integrate more interactive content options in emails, such as surveys, polls, and video content. Dynamic email content will allow businesses to create more engaging, responsive emails that adapt to the recipient’s preferences or behaviors. This will make emails more personalized and engaging, leading to higher conversion rates.
    7. Enhanced A/B Testing Capabilities
With the increasing importance of data-driven decisions, ESPs will introduce more advanced A/B testing features. This includes the ability to test multiple elements within a single email, from CTA buttons to subject lines and even design variations. Expect multi-variant testing to become a more common feature, allowing businesses to optimize their campaigns more precisely.

With these emerging trends, 2025 promises to be a year of great innovation in email marketing. Businesses will need to stay ahead of the curve by adopting platforms that integrate the latest features and functionalities. Whether you’re looking to enhance your email automation, improve deliverability, or create more personalized experiences, ESPs will continue to evolve, offering businesses the tools needed to drive success in the competitive world of eCommerce.

Selecting the right Email Service Provider (ESP) can make all the difference in driving engagement, conversions, and revenue. Whether you choose Klaviyo for its advanced ecommerce integrations and personalization, ActiveCampaign for its powerful automation and CRM features, or Customer.io for its exceptional behavioral targeting and real-time messaging, the best ESP for your business will depend on your unique needs and goals.
